Messages from Keiko Koma
9th Oct. 2019

When I opened the window this morning, I could view the blue sea. Until yesterday, the ocean was not clear as it had merged with the cloudy sky. Under a clear autumn sky today, I could walk without a coat in warm weather. We went to see a potential venue for our next concert. It stood on a street of historical buildings. The space of the concert hall indeed carried the word "history." I imagined Master Idaki Shin’s performance at the place. The director of the hall took interest in our activities and had the intention of fixing a concert date. Normally I would have been delighted to fix it. But I’ll be opening a gallery in Vladivostok, so I wished to hold the concert in accordance with the opening day. When that date is fixed, we can also fix the date of our next concert. Through the joyous encounter, I felt that our activities would expand further.
Tomorrow, October 10th, Master Idaki Shin’s concert will take place from 18:30 (Japan time 17:30). At the rehearsal today, I listened to sounds that can only be heard in this land. The wind kept blowing. Though I had difficulty putting into words the sounds I heard for the first time, when they became words, I saw history. My soul trembled in gratitude for the blessing of listening to sounds born in this place. I’m thankful that I can experience it together with everyone.
At night, I went to the seashore. I listened quietly to the lapping waves. I felt souls that long waited for a message from beyond the sea. Those with souls of Koguryo would —as I have done—have quietly listened to a message of souls in the sound of the wind and tried to read it the patterns of the sky. I became tearful, knowing that there were people who lived waiting for a message from beyond the sea. Wishing for a reunion of souls, I want to be someone who can hear the voice of souls. I’m sincerely grateful to hold Master Idaki Shin’s concert in a land where my separated compatriots lived. I wish to experience it together with everyone, transcending place and transcending time. Thank you very much.
